Shopify has two native ways to bulk edit tags, and picking the right one depends on whether the change is the same tag applied to many products or a different tag list set per product. From the Products page, select the products you want, and the selection toolbar shows Add tags and Remove tags buttons for a uniform change across everyone selected. When each product needs its own combination of tags rather than one shared addition or removal, the bulk editor's spreadsheet grid lets you rewrite the full tag list per row. Neither tool shows a full before-and-after list before it saves, so the order you filter and check in matters as much as the tag itself. ## Adding tags with the selection toolbar Go to Products, filter down to the set you want using a saved search, collection, vendor, or status filter, then check the boxes next to those products. Shopify's toolbar switches to bulk actions once anything is selected, and Add tags opens a small panel where you type a tag name or pick one that autocompletes from tags already in your store. Click through, and the tag gets added to every product you selected, on top of whatever tags they already had. This is the fastest option when you're layering a new tag onto a group, such as tagging everything in a collection ahead of a sale. ## Removing tags without opening each product Remove tags works the same way in reverse. Select the products, open Remove tags from the toolbar, and Shopify lists the tags currently present across your selection so you can pick which ones to strip out. If your selection mixes products that do and don't have a given tag, only the ones that have it are affected. Watch capitalization here: "Sale" and "sale" are treated as separate tags by Shopify's filters and collection conditions even though a theme might display them the same way, so removing the wrong case leaves some products still carrying the old tag. ## Rewriting the full list in the bulk editor grid When products need different final tag sets rather than one shared addition or removal, open the bulk editor from the Products page toolbar and add a Tags column if it isn't already showing. Each cell holds that product's complete, comma-separated tag list, and clicking into a cell lets you retype it. This replaces the whole cell instead of adding to it, so pasting in a new set of tags without including the ones you want to keep wipes them out for that row. It suits a supplier feed or a spreadsheet of category tags you're pasting in product by product, not a single tag change you want everyone to share. ## Filtering before you touch anything Both approaches only affect what's currently selected, so the filter you build on the Products page does the real work. Filtering by an existing tag, vendor, product type, or status narrows the list before you touch tags at all, and saving that filter as a view lets you reopen the same set later to check it. A filter broader than you meant, like a tag filter that also matches a similar tag name, is the most common way a tag edit lands on products it shouldn't. ## What tends to go wrong Tags that drive smart collections or discount conditions carry the most risk: removing a tag in bulk can drop products out of a collection or an active promotion, and Shopify gives no warning about that at save time. A typo in a new tag added to two hundred products means finding and removing that exact string from all two hundred, since there's no single rename action for tags applied this way.
